Winter Readiness Checklist for Industrial Boilers
Keep your plant running efficiently and safely through New England’s coldest months.
Use this Collins-prepared checklist to prepare your steam and condensate systems, valves, and compressed air network for winter operation.

Safety & Compliance
- Test all safety and relief valves - ensure NB/VR certification is current
- Inspect low-water cutoffs, level controls, and pressure switches
- Verify proper operation of all alarms and interlocks

Clean & Inspect
- Clean fire- and water-sides to improve heat transfer
- Flush sediment and inspect feedwater systems
- Inspect and replace faulty steam traps

Feedwater & Condensate
- Test water chemistry (pH, oxygen scavenger, hardness)
- Inspect condensate lines and tanks for leaks or corrosion
- Verify chemical feed system performance

Combustion & Controls
- Tune burners for cold-weather efficiency
- Calibrate combustion analyzers, transmitters, and sensors
- Check damper and actuator movement for smooth operation

Freeze Protection
- Insulate and heat-trace exposed lines and valves
- Check compressed air dryers and moisture traps
- Verify condensate return paths are clear
Spare Parts & Emergency Planning
- Stock common gaskets, seals, and valve kits
- Confirm supplier contact info for 24/7 emergency service
- Review shutdown/startup procedures with all operators
